But sometimes the best days of my holidays have been spent doing almost nothing - curled up on a sun lounger in the garden with a good book, or sitting at a harbourside cafe while I watch the world go by. At the end of my holiday, when I return home, I am rejuvenated - sometimes it even feels as if I have managed to capture a little piece of this paradise and bring it back with me.

The pretty Venetian harbour of Kyrenia (Girne) is just a few miles down the hill, and the lively buzz of Nicosia (Lefkosia)with its Ottoman mansions and Byzantine churches is close by too. There is the fantastic Roman site of Salamis, the haunting monastery of St Barnabus, and the lofty crusader castles of St Hilarion, Buffavento and Kantara. Then there is Famagusta, with its ruined cathedral, and walled city with a tower that inspired Shakespeare's Othello. In the Karpaz peninsular there is an even slower pace of life. Wild donkeys wander unhindered through carpets of wildflowers in the spring, and the walker stumbles at every turn across ancient churches, graveyards and quarries. Beach after sandy beach - perfect, yet almost guaranteed to be empty - greets the traveller at every turn.
